Much of my December was spent at the beach, at festivals and at barbecues-- when I wasn't busy working of course.
The 5th of December was a massively fun day in Wellington. A group of my friends and I went to Downtown Shakedown which was a music festival on the waterfront that sold out at around 11,000 tickets. It was so wild being in one of the only places in the world that something like that was happening Covid free! Some big Kiwi acts performed like BENEE, L.A.B., and Ladi6. To be fair I wasn't too familiar with much of the music before moving to NZ but boy has it found a place in my heart now.
We had an absolute blast at the festival all day and then headed straight to a rave at the other end of the waterfront. Somehow after that we mustered the energy to make it out to town. What a day that was! I remember being almost permanently in a state of awe the whole day just trying to comprehend the fact that I had the freedom and ability to be doing so much. I mean I went to a festival, a rave, and out to town all in one day. There's no where else would I have been able to do that safely in this Covid world!
A few days later Corey and I bought a car together that we planned to convert into a camper car for our upcoming road trip of the South Island. What big adult things! We drove away with it that day and picked up a few of our friends to go for sunset and snacks on the beach at Red Rocks. What a happy wholesome night that was! The next couple weeks leading up to Christmas I was busy working and enjoying my last shifts at Rosie's before I'd be leaving for the holiday and summer season and then be heading off on the road trip.
This Christmas was the first one I had ever spent without family but I was really lucky to be surrounded by a new family of friends. Christmas Eve Corey and I went out for a lovely dinner with some delicious cocktails overlooking the Wellington water front. We then spent the rest of the night hanging out with friends and having such a laugh.
On Christmas Day I had a big zoom call with my family who were all together in Atlanta. I popped some bubbles and said cheers to the holidays with them. It definitely wasn't the same as it would have been being there with them, but it was really special seeing them all in one place. I then got ready for a classic kiwi Christmas-- a barbecue in the nice summer weather with lots of friends and drinks and yummy food. One of my mates who hosted the party had been fostering baby kittens that kept everyone occupied. They were so cute!
To finish off the month Corey and I went out for a lovely dinner at Havana Bar (which has become one of my new favorite restaurants) to celebrate the season. Mom, being as on top of things as she always is, is the one who found and suggested the restaurant. She was on her game as usual, the food was absolutely divine! Shortly after we headed up North with a few friends for New Year's and to ring in 2021 with a bang.
More to come
